We pridefully announce La Réserve Golf Links' achievement of the GEO (Golf Environment Organisation) Certified® Development 'Designed and Built' status. Officially conferred on November 20, this globally recognised standard for sustainable golf mirrors Rogers' enduring dedication to fostering sustainability in its operations.
Mickaël Apaya, Rogers' Chief Sustainability and Inclusive Development Executive shares his insights:
This prestigious award is far more than just an accolade; it symbolises our profound dedication to sustainable practices in the Bel Ombre region. Governed by GEO Certification Ltd., the process mandates strict adherence to environmental and social performance standards. These standards are framed and continually refined under the guidance of the ISEAL Code, which emphasises the development of transparent, measurable criteria through collaborative multi-stakeholder involvement. This approach ensures that critical areas such as efficient resource use, wildlife conservation, and community engagement are not only rigorously evaluated but also credibly addressed. This effectively builds trust among stakeholders.
During the certification process led by the teams of Rogers Hospitality, La Réserve Golf Links effectively fulfilled the essential assessment criteria: in nature through environmental planning and conservation; in resources by managing water and soil sustainably; and in the community through active engagement.
For large green spaces such as golf courses, which are home to diverse habitats, it is crucial to contribute to ecosystem protection and enhancement. Maintaining healthy, thriving landscapes and fostering community prosperity are essential elements of golf facility operations. La Reserve Golf Links, located near a sensitive wetland area implemented various conservation measures to protect the ecosystem. They restricted development in designated protected areas, maintained buffer zones around water bodies, and utilised native plant species for landscaping to support local biodiversity. The facility also employed integrated pest management techniques such as biological control and reduced pesticide use to minimise negative impacts on the environment.
In terms of resource management, La Réserve Golf Links showed a responsible approach to water and energy use, material sourcing, and waste management. This included measures to improve irrigation efficiency, minimise clubhouse water consumption, and diversify the energy supply to reduce carbon emissions. Through regular monitoring and reporting, they ensured compliance with wastewater treatment regulations and effectively managed hazardous substances, further showcasing their commitment to sustainable practices.
Furthermore, La Réserve Golf Links actively engages with the local community, demonstrating a commitment to delivering socio-economic benefits.
Commenting on this stride, General Manager of Heritage Golf Club, Jonathan Menteath asserts: “This is a major achievement for us in Bel Ombre, solidifying our leadership in sustainable golf. It aptly showcases our efforts in addressing climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to pioneering new standards in golf, shaping the future of the sport, and our dedication to environmental responsibility in the global golf community. It is heartening and further motivates us to keep striving for a sustainable future and attracting a new wave of eco-conscious golfers.”
This landmark course, the first of its kind in the Indian Ocean, stands as a proud achievement of the Rogers Group and a distinguished part of Heritage Golf Club. Its unique location, adjacent to a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve, exemplifies a successful integration of high-end leisure with sustainable practices, paving the way for a greener future in tourism. Our ambition of establishing the Bel Ombre Territory as the reference for 'Sustainable Tropical Art de Vivre' shows promising advancements.
