bis lamer

Project overview:

The Bis Lamer initiative is a mobile education unit partnership between Rogers Foundation, Reef Conservation, and the Mauritian government. It aims to educate Mauritians about marine and environmental issues using a mobile classroom called the "School on Wheels."

The project provides interactive marine education to primary and secondary school children, youngsters, and the public in various public areas such as beaches, shopping malls, private companies, and community centres. They prioritise hands-on teaching and use interactive tools such as training displays and laboratory equipment.

The team, comprising trained personnel and qualified biologists, focuses on educating and sensitising people about the impact of human behaviour on the lagoon and sustainable practices related to natural resources. Emphasis is laid on significant issues that impact many's lives, such as the consequences of overfishing, the result of climate change on the growth of coral, or the way plastic affects marine living organisms.

Additionally, it partners with coastal communities, including anglers, boat operators, and those in the tourism industry, to promote sustainable methods of resource exploitation.

Our strategy:

At Rogers, we are committed to making a meaningful change in the world. The Bis Lamer initiative helps sensitise the importance of biodiversity and its preservation. Communicating internally and externally on biodiversity impacts and dependencies is critical to raise biodiversity awareness and encouraging education, knowledge sharing, and engagement with key stakeholders.

By supporting Bis Lamer, we pursue our commitment to Business Mauritius’ SigneNatir pact through education and sensitisation on marine science and environmental issues.

Tracking progress:

The project is an excellent example of how partnerships between non-governmental organisations (NGOs), private companies like ours, and the government can achieve positive results. Through collaboration with Reef Conservation, Rogers Foundation, and the Mauritian government (through a Memorandum of understanding signed with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development), we have made noteworthy progress in raising awareness about marine ecosystems and environmental issues.

Bis Lamer continuously reaches and sensitises several audiences including schools, scouts group, hotels, private companies, commercial centres, foundations, NGOs and community groups.
