Fam Unie and Rogers Foundation - Empowering Women

Project Overview

Since its establishment in 2022, the NGO Fam-Unie Foundation is on a mission to foster women empowerment and community development. In collaboration with Rogers Capital and the Rogers Foundation, the NGO has launched the Women Entrepreneurship Programme. An initiative tailored specifically for the vulnerable women of the crownland Paul & Virginie village (also known as Ti Rodrigues) in Cité La Cure.

These women face a myriad of daily challenges, to which the programme offers a solution through a series of workshops designed to bolster their skills. The training’s curriculum covers topics ranging from sewing to baking, as well as painting and pottery.

The initiative is notable for two key reasons:

Firstly, it ensures that participants acquire both creative skills and the essential literacy and numeracy abilities necessary for managing micro-entrepreneurial ventures. This holistic approach empowers them to handle their finances effectively and communicate confidently, fostering independence and self-reliance.

Secondly, the programme is a crucial bridge connecting emerging entrepreneurs with potential markets. It assists these participants in marketing their artisanal creations and navigating the complexities of selling them by exposing these ladies to opportunities ranging from craft markets to corporate clients. Here, each creation symbolises hope, perseverance, and innovation, thoughtfully crafted to resonate with its audience.

New Sustainable Agriculture for food security and livelihood project

The Foundation recently launched another flagship initiative: the "Sustainable Agriculture for food security and livelihood" project. It aims at providing women with a source of income while contributing to the community's food security. Funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) under the Small Grants Programme (SGP), the project was officially launched in February 2024. The launch event was graced by distinguished guests, including the Honourable Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, and the Minister of Tourism; Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, and Pamela Bapoo from the UNDP. Additionally, this event also celebrated the inauguration of an organic garden created in December 2023 by the women of the foundation.

Aim of Rogers’ support

Rogers’ support of this initiative comes from a heartfelt commitment to create Meaningful Change by shaping a better future for women facing challenges. The Women Entrepreneurship Programme aligns with the group's strategic Inclusive Development pillar as part of its Sustainability and Inclusive Development strategy.

Tracking progress

In 2023, the Women Entrepreneurship Programme directly impacted 80 women, and by extension, benefiting their families as well. It is evident that this initiative promotes financial independence, reducing economic strain on these participating women’s households. Hosted at the NGO's community centre in Cité La Cure, the courses are designed with flexibility in mind, with durations ranging from three to nine months. This ensures that that all women, regardless of their other obligations, can participate.
